SXSW 2026: South by Southwest Conference & Festivals

South by Southwest is nine days of music, film, tech, and comedy that takes over downtown Austin every March. It's equal parts industry conference and chaotic street festival — and it's genuinely unlike anything else. This year runs March 12–18, 2026 (condensed from the usual nine days due to ongoing Austin Convention Center construction). If you're going, here's what to lock in now.

Is SXSW Worth the Trip?

For the right person, absolutely. A full trip — badge, hotel, flights, food, drinks — runs roughly $1,500–$5,000+ depending on how you play it. The value is high if you're in music, film, tech, or media: the programming density is absurd, and the unofficial showcases, brand activations, and hallway conversations are half the point. If you're coming purely as a music fan, you can skip the badge entirely and catch free shows on 6th Street and Red River — but you'll miss the conference and ticketed showcases.

Skip it if you need a relaxing vacation, hate crowds, or expect hotel rates to be normal. Austin in March during SXSW is expensive, loud, and packed.

Tickets (Badges)

SXSW doesn't sell "tickets" — it sells badges that determine your access level. Walk-up prices are brutal. Buy early.

| Badge | Access | Advance Price | Walk-Up Price | |---|---|---|---| | Platinum | Everything — all conferences, showcases, film, comedy | ~$2,095 | Higher | | Innovation | Interactive/tech conference + panels | ~$895 | ~$1,395+ | | Film & TV | Film screenings, TV programming | ~$750 | ~$1,225 | | Music | Official showcases, music programming | ~$500 | Higher | | EDU | SXSW EDU (March 9–12 only) | ~$545 | Higher |

Prices are estimates based on current posted rates. Confirm at before purchasing.

What to know:

  • Platinum badges get 3 reservations/day; other badges get 2. Reservations matter — popular sessions fill via the SXSW app.
  • Group discounts exist (Legion M and others have offered group-rate Platinum badges in past years — worth checking).
  • Music Wristbands can be added to Innovation or Film & TV badges at checkout.
  • Don't buy from third-party resellers. SXSW badges are non-transferable.

When to Go / Event Schedule

SXSW EDU: March 9–12 (separate registration) SXSW Main Event: March 12–18, 2026

The event runs 7 days this year instead of the usual 9 — programming is denser, crowds won't thin midweek the way they used to. A few timing notes:

  • Opening weekend (March 12–13): Heaviest crowds. Lines are longest, energy peaks, unofficial parties are everywhere.
  • Mid-week (March 14–16): Industry crowd thins slightly. Often the best days for getting into sessions without waiting.
  • Final days (March 17–18): A second crowd surge. Closing showcases, last-chance screenings.

If you're coming primarily for music: plan around Thursday–Saturday nights. If you're there for conferences: Tuesday through Thursday are your sweet spot.

Where to Stay

Book through SXSW Housing first — they hold rooms at negotiated rates that are often cheaper than booking direct, and several official venues are inside hotels.

Three neighborhoods worth considering:

Downtown / Convention District — Zero commute to conference venues. Omni Austin, Austin Marriott Downtown, and Downright Austin (the festival's unofficial clubhouse) are all official SXSW programming hotels. Rates during the festival are high, but you won't spend money on Ubers. Best for badge holders doing heavy conference programming.

East Austin — Trendy, walkable to Red River music venues and the Rainey Street bar scene. A bit more affordable than downtown, but you'll pay for rideshares or walk 15–25 minutes. Good for music-forward attendees.

South Austin (South Congress / SoCo) — Quieter, boutique-hotel vibes, close to Lady Bird Lake. Furthest from the main action but often the best rates. Budget-conscious option if you're comfortable with the commute.

Budget option: The Firehouse Hostel sits in central downtown, 5 minutes from 6th Street, with private rooms and dorms. Free breakfast included.

How to Get There

Fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) — it's the obvious choice. About 7 miles from downtown, 15 minutes by car outside peak traffic. During SXSW, rideshare surge pricing from AUS can run $30–60+, so build that into your budget or take the bus.

CapMetro Route 20 runs from the airport to downtown for ~$5. Slow but reliable if you're not in a rush.

From major hubs (estimates, not guarantees — book now):

  • NYC (JFK/LGA/EWR): $200–400 round trip
  • LA (LAX): $150–350 round trip
  • Chicago (ORD): $180–350 round trip
  • Atlanta (ATL): $150–300 round trip

Flights into AUS for SXSW week are a known surge period. If you haven't booked, do it today.

What to Book First

  1. Badge — Sells out at lower price tiers; walk-up rates are painful.
  2. Hotel through SXSW Housing — Negotiated blocks disappear. Book simultaneously with your badge.
  3. Flights — AUS is already filling for March 12–18. Every day you wait costs money.
  4. App download — The SXSW app is how you make session reservations. Set it up before you arrive.

Budget Breakdown

All figures are estimates. Hotel and flight costs fluctuate significantly based on timing and demand.

FAQ

Do I need a badge to enjoy SXSW? No. Hundreds of free showcases, brand activations, and street performances happen during SXSW without any badge required. You'll miss official conference sessions and ticketed showcases, but the free programming is substantial. Red River Cultural District and 6th Street are your main free music hubs.

Is SXSW 2026 shorter than usual? Yes — 7 days instead of the typical 9, due to Austin Convention Center construction. Programming is condensed, which means more competition for session seats and potentially longer lines.

When do session reservations open? Reservations open through the SXSW app closer to the event. Platinum badge holders get 3 reservations/day; other badge types get 2. Popular keynotes and big-name sessions fill instantly — set app notifications and move fast.

What's the best airport for SXSW? Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is the only realistic answer. It's 7 miles from downtown. San Antonio (SAT) is about 80 miles away — a fallback if AUS is sold out, but budget for a rental car or long rideshare.

Can I transfer my badge if I can't go? No. SXSW badges are non-transferable and tied to your name and ID.
